Dean’s Message

Gina Cowley, 2022 Costume College Dean

I am honored to be your Dean for Costume College 2022! My amazing committee and I have already begun planning our return to an in-person event (of course, with contingencies in case the world goes sideways again). I am so looking forward to gathering with my tribe of fellow costume lovers, seeing what everyone has created since we last gathered, presenting lots of fabulous classes, and attending some fun events.

In 2019, I was planning an event themed around the ’20s, which seemed appropriate for Costume College 2020 following Geri Rex’s planned theme of The Teens. Then Covid happened and our whole world changed. These ’20s have not been the best decade so far, although they seem to have been improving lately, so I have decided to change the theme for Costume College 2022. As we come to the end of our forced time out, I believe we have been given a chance to rethink how we live and perhaps change the world, even if just a little, for the better. So to celebrate that change, I would like to announce the theme for Costume College 2022:

Costuming Post Apocalypse: Creating a New World

Although I love Mad Max, this theme is not just about post-apocalyptic costumes. It is about how we create new worlds through costume, such as the Star Wars universe, the Old West with robots, or so many worlds populated by zombies. It is also about how good things and new styles can come from terrible times, like the 50’s iconic ‘New Look” following WWII or because of Zoom. I have actually talked to my family more in the past year than before the pandemic!

We have just begun the planning process, so I do not have my entire committee lined up yet, let alone all of the event themes. But I would like to give you a teaser of what is to come. I know that many people were already working on their Titanic costumes for Geri’s Gala when we so tragically had to cancel Costume College 2020, and the Titanic was a mini apocalypse, so I have decided to continue with Geri’s theme for the Gala: The Titanic: A Night to Remember... I would love to have a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Sunday Tea, but I am still looking for someone willing to host it for me. We are planning a Welcome Party for Thursday Night, a Showcase Evening for Friday night, and Sunday Breakfast with themes TBD. Please look for announcements and new information on our Website (the new Costume College website will be launching in the near future!) and on social media.

There are still spaces available on the planning committee, including positions that do not require local residence, so if you would like to volunteer to help plan an amazing event, please contact me at [email protected]

Cheers, Gina
